![]() ![]() I would have thought that would be easier to write than an entire stand alone app such as this. Namely to simply have an extension that opens a pop out window (much like making a shortcut to voice has) but allowing it to run in the taskbar as a background Chrome app. Chats can be used for many purposes - whether you're looking for some entertainment while waiting in line at Starbucks or sharing your latest vacation photos. How to download and install Hangouts on a PC/Laptop with Windows 11,10,8 & 7 (32 Bit, 64 Bit) Make sure your computer/laptop meets the system requirements of. Personally, it seems a bit of overkill as I would have thought it was less work (and less resources) to mimic the functionality the Hangouts extension had. The Hangouts app has the standard features of most messaging apps like Zoom and allows users to easily send emojis, status updates, videos, or photos. ![]() Kudos to the dev though for stepping up with this for those that need it. That is the main advantage of this app if you can't abide simply keeping a GV tab pinned in your always open Chrome. You can of course always pop out your GV tab (or make an app shortcut to do this), but you run the risk of closing the window and not getting your notifications. I would say the main reason to use this app is if you don't keep Chrome open all the time (I do) or for some reason you *must* have your GV texts in a separate window. I have found that just keeping a tab open and pinned in my browser with web notifications enabled works well. However, using the GV web page within Chrome is much less memory intensive than running this app in tandem with Chrome. Once installed, the app integrates with your device’s operating system to function like a built-in app (similar. The app is a Progressive Web Application (PWA), which provides the ability to use Chat on any desktop device with the Google Chrome web browser. My assumption is because this is based on Chrome and has to replicate an instance of Chrome which itself opens multiple tabs and is a total memory hog. Earlier this year, Google launched a new Google Chat standalone app. This app uses about 200 MB of memory and runs multiple processes. However, while it replicates my Hangouts experience fairly closely in GV (separate window, minimize to taskbar on close!, etc), I don't think I'll be using it. This is just about as perfect as you could ask for given the current circumstance. So now that Hangouts is totally dead for calls and receiving incoming GV SMS needed to find an alternative to the Hangouts extension for Voice which would emulate it as much as possible. ![]()
